Local Companies Step Up to the Plate and Donate Defibrillator (AED)-
Helping save lives without worrying about budget
Sports and recreation facilities nationwide are taking extra
measures to ensure they are protected - from kneepads to helmets;
protective gear helps keep people safe from injury. However, another
piece of equipment is desperately needed to keep kids, coaches and
spectators safe: the lifesaving automated external defibrillator
(AED). In an effort to help one local park and recreation
organization implement cardiac safety without having to come up with
budget, Executive Producer and Host of The Topcat Sports Show (WNJC
1360-AM), David Unkle, and Philadelphia-based CardioReady, Inc.,
have teamed up to donate an AED and complete cardiac emergency
readiness program, which includes training, maintenance and program
support, to the Glassboro Park & Recreation Department.
CardioReady provided the AED Plus manufactured by ZOLL Medical
Corporation to The Topcat Sports Show. David Unkle, Kerry Hickok,
CardioReady Director of Sales, and Bob Splane, a local ZOLL
representative, presented the AED to Glassboro Park & Recreation at
an on-field presentation on September 3, 2003 at the Camden
Riversharks pre-game event.
The bottom line is, SCA kills more people than lung cancer, breast
cancer and AIDs combined. Despite this, only half of all ambulances
and fewer than 1 percent of emergency police and fire vehicles have
defibrillators. Therefore, it is important for AEDs to become
commonplace in public areas, especially in sports and recreation
settings - critical even in youth sports due to the potential for
blunt chest trauma.
